An Intimate Cocoa Beach Wedding on Florida's Space Coast
Sometimes unexpected things happen on your wedding day, but the unexpected can end up becoming exactly what makes the day memorable. As a wedding photographer, I’ve come to learn that flexibility is especially important when photographing weddings in Florida. This intimate Cocoa Beach wedding is a perfect example.
Lisa and Shawn had originally planned to exchange vows at the Maritime Hammock Reserve, a location where a beautiful gazebo, and natural surroundings would have provided the perfect backdrop for their ceremony and portrait shots. Mother Nature had her own plans, though. When rain made the outdoor ceremony impractical, the celebration was moved indoors to Siam Orchid, where the reception was already planned.
Getting Ready and the Moments You Don't Plan
As they say, "the show must go on." Once the decision was made to pivot I went about capturing the details and mementos the bride and groom had each chosen for their wedding before moving on to the getting-ready photographs.
While capturing the groom’s portraits, his son unexpectedly peeked through a window. It was completely unplanned, and became one of those photographs that reminded me why I’m always watching for what is happening beyond the pose.
A Cocoa Beach Wedding Ceremony Filled With Family
As the day went on, it was clear what was truly important to Lisa and Shawn—family. They were the heart of the ceremony, right down to her mom serving as the officiant. It was truly an honor to be there to capture the love between the bride, groom, and their blended family. One of the first emotional moments came when Lisa's son got teary-eyed seeing his mom in her wedding dress for the first time during the ceremony.
Reception and Wedding Portraits at Siam Orchid
Post-ceremony, the rain stopped but the grounds at the Maritime Hammack Reserve were still wet and soggy. Lisa didn't want to risk ruining the train of her dress or her shoes, so we used the grounds surrounding Siam Orchid and the adjoining hotel for the couple's portraits, family photos, and bridal party shots. The overcast skies delivered soft, even lighting, which was a nice bonus.
Back inside, the celebration continued at Siam Orchid with their family and close friends. There was dancing and a cupcake tower instead of a traditional cake. What I enjoyed most about my time with Lisa and Shawn was that the day was completely their own. With love and laughter shared among an intimate group of those they held dear, the celebration felt deeply personal.
Planning Your Own Cocoa Beach Wedding
My number one tip for couples planning a wedding in the Cocoa Beach area, or elsewhere in Florida, is to be flexible! This is especially important if you want an outdoor ceremony during our rainy season (June to November). Florida weather can change quickly, so choose a venue with both indoor and outdoor options that you love so that you are ready to pivot at a moment's notice.
